In this very competitive age where job shortages and an ever growing demand on limited resources are prevalent opportunities are increasingly declining and parents desperate to give their child an extra edge are resorting to scholarship programs.

Many schools are offering a broader range of scholarships in all areas of the performing arts , music, language and visual arts as well as offering places in the more traditional mainstream scholarship areas of  science and maths.Usually there are scholarship entry points at years 5 , 7 and 9 with more selective entry into year 11 programs.

Historically the scholarship  was offered to afford brilliant all round diligent students a place into an exclusive fee paying school. The student was generally expected to enhance the institutions academic record by achieving brilliant results and thus provide an excellent PR advertisement for the school .

Good students in state government schools were offered the commonwealth scholarship to encourage students and assist families with educational costs .

There are also government selective entry secondary colleges that require successful completion of  an entrance examination so candidates can attend a school of their like minded peers with equal intellectual aspirations .

Today there is such fierce competition for the scholarships on offer that many coaching businesses   have  been established to prepare students for scholarship exams or to gain an entry to selective educational institutions .
