The State Government is taking action to lift Tasmania's adult literacy rates, the Minister for Education and Skills Lin Thorp said today. "It would be fair to say that our low literacy rates are holding us back from increasing our participation rate," Ms Thorp said. "Through the Adult Literacy Action Plan, we aim to improve the core skills levels of Tasmanians ? to improve access to, and participation in, further education, employment and training." Ms Thorp said funding rounds recently closed for two important programs funded through the Adult Literacy Action Plan ? the Employer Pledge Program and the Adult Literacy Community Grants Program. "These two programs form part of an $11 million investment over four years to improve adult literacy, starting with $2.4 million in 2010-11," Ms Thorp said.
